  1. The earliest settlers were the pygmy Twa, then later the Bantu, Hutus, and
  2. the Watusi (Tutsi).  During the late 1800s, Germans settled there.  The
  3. Germans lost control of the area to Belgium in 1916.  Belgium later gave the
  4. region and Ruanda-Urundi to the Trusteeship of the UN.  Independence finally
  5. came to Burundi in 1962.  The monarchy was abolished and in 1972-73 there
  6. was a tragic Hutu rebellion which left 10,000  Watusi dead and 150,000 Hutu
  7. dead.  Many Hutu fled to Zaire and Tanzania.  Burundi is one of the poorest
  8. and densely populated countries of Africa despite its country's vow to bring
  9. about ethnic reconciliation between the Watusi and the Hutu.
